I’m reassembling my car after painting and I’m working on the headlamps. My ’66 has the 4 brackets that hold the lamps. Each bracket is held on by 2 adj screws and a spring. Here’s the question… only one bracket has a little bit of metal for the spring to hook on to. The other 3 brackets just have an open slot and the spring clips on to the SS trim ring. Hooking the spring to the SS trim makes it a bit awkward to install/remove the headlamp because you have to hook everything together – bracket, SS ring and lamp. However it does hold everything well once it’s on.
The headlight capsule should be assembled together, that's the capsule the bulb and the ring. Then all you have to do is hook the spring up and swing the assembly in to slip the adjustment screws into the slots.

also make sure you get the correct bulb, "hi/lo" in the correct place.

So, how is it supposed to be?
thanks.... Joe
I made a 'gonad hooker' out of an old manual choke ****/wire that makes hooking up those springs a lot easier. Beats the hassel of using a needle nose pliers.

Just re-read your post. You only have one good ring, the other three should have a tab with a closed end slot for the spring to hook on to.

Yup - made one of those many years ago, specifically for that usage; makes popping those headlamp retaining ring springs on and off a piece of cake.
Thanks for the feedback... Got all four on and all is good but definately 3 of the brackets are missing the little tab for the spring to hook on to. I hooked the spring on the the ring trim and it seems to hold everything fine.
BTW... I used a little hook tool I got from HF some years ago. Made poping on the spring sooo easy.
The car is slowly coming together. I've taken a few days off from work to get a jump on the reassembly.... A LOT OF PARTS!!
