Default Source for Temperature Sending Unit

I want to install a new temperature sending unit; the current one works fine at 180 degrees but progressively overstates the actual temperature (as measured with an IR gun) as the coolant temperature rises above 180. I understand that some don't work well while others do. The units sold by Zip, DeWitt and Corvette Clocks by Roger claim to be in the latter category. Any recommendations? Thank you!

TU 5 from Auto Zone has been the most accurate (matches my IR gun reading) and I have tried several.

Before you do that, get a cheap aftermarket or used gauge that works correctly and hook it up to your current sender. The old gauges do some weird things quite often. K

You can contact Mary Jo (vettegal.com) to see if she still has old Delco senders from the 60s. I think she was selling them for $40. Another source could be the junkyards if you have them in your area. Look for any 70s GM vehicle that was gauge equipped. ( Cold- Hot indicator not idiot light)

On my boat engine (420SB), I have installed mechanical temp gauges directly into the water passage of the intake manifold. If an unused threaded hole is available in a manifold, this may be a viable option for monitoring temps.

Thank you. But it turns out that she seems to specialize in C1 parts; mine is a C2.

I believe C-1 & C-2 Temp senders are calibrated the same.

The one I got from Zip works great. It is accurate within 5 degrees to the IR gun. Seems close enough for me.

Sorry; I think you're right--most vendors sell the same unit for C1s and C2s. But it turns out that she has no senders for sale right now.

I had the DeWitt sending unit installed. It seems to work fine, except that the gauge now doesn't even reach 180 degrees and clearly understates the actual temperature. Oh well, at least my wife will no longer bug me because the gauge goes way over to the right.

Mine from them does the same. I tried a couple of the TU-5 units and got wildly different readings from both of them. I ended up using the one from DeWitts only because I couldn't handle the gauge reading too hot even though I know it's not overheating.

I went with the TU5, and it match's IR gun, and meat thermo. So I'm happy.

I got sick of the after market senders reading to high as well. So I got hold of an original delco and it's readings to my gauge are perfect ! Stewy
