the assembly manual shows the torque settings on page G181 for the 3 smaller bolts (25- 35 ft lbs) but makes no mention of the center bolt, interesting.
What year are you working on as this bolt was not on the older engines and that may be the reason there is no torque spec.
I could not find it in my 66 shop manual either... Although I may have missed it. Other references I had show the torque from 65 to 85 ft lbs depending on the reference. All the references showed 85 for a big block.

Harry
do not try 85 lbs. for sure
look up the torque specs for the bolt size and go from there
i would think if 3/8, 35-40 lbs and 7/16, 40-45.......there is really no danger of less torque here b/c of the keyway.....jmo....
Frank is probably right. I did a quick Internet search on it and came up with 60 to 85. No harm in being at the low end, especially since they built a lot of engines with no bolt at all!
tighten the crank bolt until the motor turns /rotates. use lok-tite. red i think..
i'm not sure what the torque would be ..but you can check it out after tightening..i've done mine this way and never had any losening problem.
however,it doesnt hurt to recheck it every once in a while though...
7/16" crank bolt on SBC, and usually 1/2" on BBC..
hope this helps.
