'55 V-8 had the dipstick in the block, on the driver's side, and the crank pulley was riveted to the damper. Photos below shot on the shipping dock at Flint V-8 in 1955 also show the long/short oil pan indentations.

Your picture illustrates a pass car engine. Is the Corvette pan different?

Agree on the riveted balancer.

thanks for the info on the 53s. i would have thought the block numbers would be close. one would think 50 or so engines would be delivered at one time. doing a little research it appears the first 240 cars have block numbers that are very random, while the last 60, although not in order, seem to be blocks in the 566970 to 567030 range, showing a bulk delivery.

265 corvette oil pan is the same as the passenger car oil pan.

There is a pattern to the stampings sequence but no firm cutoffs. Most 53 engines were the months D, H and J, primarily. Most believe that there were no 911 blocks in 53. Only 481 blocks. Not sure anyone really knows for sure.

BTW, what documentation exists for the ten six cylinder 55's? Can you scan and post it, please? I have never seen documentation to support ten cars.

Thanks
Brett

Brett,

I have never understood the reasoning behind why GM put the six cyclinders at all into 1955's. Do you know? A friend of mine had one which was purchased new for a young girl as a graduation present. She shortly after rolled the car in the Lake Tahoe area afterwhich the car was parked for many years. Someone from the east coast eventually heard of the car and tracked my friend down and purchased it. I believe it was a yellow car. I have never seen one in person.

Thanks in advance.
