Default 62 starter mounting

The saga of getting a correct PG transmission back in my 62 continues. I recently obtained a correct 62 aluminum PG transmission and would like to get it into the car.

Does anyone have a picture of the 62 327 block and in particular the area, both front and rear, of where the starter mounts?

It is my understanding that starting in 62, the starter mounted to the block vs. 61 and prior it was mounted to the cast iron transmission. My starter is mounted to a housting that is between the transmission and engine block. This housing is about 1 1/2" to 2" thick. The trans is bolted to the rear and it must be bolted to the block internally.

My NCRS Spec. Guide indicated the starter should be number 1107242. My starter is number on the outer shell casing 1107247.

Some time prior to me owing this 62, that was born with a PG transmission, the trans was changed from the aluminum to a 58 cast iron PG. The block is correctly stamped with the codes for the 300 HP enginge, PG transmission and VIN.

I suspect that this car was hit in the front right area and possibly damaged the starter area of the block which caused the repairman to change the transmission because of the different mounting point of the starter.

As always, any info that can be provided will be appreciated.

Finally, as we approach Veterans Day 2010, please take the time to thank a uniformed vet for there service and sacrafices. It will not only make them feel great but also you will feel that much better.

Bob this is the best I can do right now.

This is my 62 with a 4 speed. You can see holes in the block near the starter - that's in the vicinity where the powerglide starter mounts. And then on the front of the starter a brace will be bolted between the starter and the block - only on powerglide cars.

Jeff: Is that a stamped steel plate between your block and trans housing? I am not sure I see how the starter attaches to either the block or this stamped plate.

Yes but remember my car is a 4 speed so that's a bell housing. The steel plate is quite small and bolts in place to cover the bottom 25% of the bell housing, that part that is below the oil pan. It goes on after the bell housing has been installed but before the starter is mounted (on a 4 speed car).

I am not sure I see how the starter attaches to either the block or this stamped plate.
On MY car the starter bolts to the bell housing, so the bolts penetrate that steel plate. What I was attempting to show you was the area of the block (where the holes are near the starter) that a Powerglide starter would attach.

Here's the starter on my 65, and by then all starters mounted to the block. If you look carefully to the far left of the photo you can see part of one of the bolt heads for the starter mount.

I might be doing more harm than good since I don't actually have photos of a Powerglide 62, I'm instead using existing photos to guide your eyes to where things would go.

The cast iron PG's have that extra plate the starter bolts to. The aluminum PG's don't.

The starter bolts on an aluminum PG go straight up into the block. If you look at the later starter, it's self explanatory.

I can't remember but I think the '62 cast iron PG engines (pass car) weren't drilled for the starters that bolted on vertically. If your car was original PG, the holes should be there. If not, it's a simple job to drill and tap the holes.

Thanks to all for input. I changed my jack stands last night to get more height. I have not been able to get a good look at how and where my current starter is actually mounted on the cast iron PG.

I will try to take some pictures of what I have and post.

With a cast iron Powerglide, the starter is mounted to the iron adapter housing with horizontal bolts; no exceptions. With the aluminum Powerglide, the (different) starter is mounted to the engine block with vertical bolts. The machined pad where the starter mounts on the block is near the bottom of the photo below. If you have the 870 block, they were all drilled for the block-mounted starter.
