is the ZZ4 balancer different from the the one i presently use on my 70 LT-1?
if it is different, there is not enough clearance to my front crossmember to use an 8" balancer so i need to find a balanced one that will work on a ZZ4 that is smaller in diameter than the normal 8".
what i have seen on Jegs/Summit/ebay is very expensive... anyone have any suggestions?

Originally used on 1970-74 350ci LT1, Z28, and L82, this cast iron balancer has an inertia ring that is 1-11/16" wide, has the 1969 and later timing marks and is used on all ZZ4 H0 engines.
I used this 8" on ZZ4 I put in '65 ===> Click Here
i am not a expert. i have a zz4 on a stand w/ less than 1k miles. the balance or dampner
needs to be neutral balance. the engine is internal balance. it is the flywheel that needs to
be balanced do to the crank end on one pc main seals. i would say you have the right
balancer. i am sure i will be corrected if i am wrong. best of luck jim

Plasticman has basically confirmed what you have said; the 383 and 400 engines are the only ones that need an 'externally' balanced dampener.

Yep, SBC 3.75" stroke engines get an externally balanced balancer (torsional damper). Shorter stroke engines like the 5.7L / 350 CI are internally balanced, and use a neutrally balanced unit.
But as with everything, there are other options. You can internally balance a 3.75" stroke engine (not cheap) and then use a neutral balanced balancer.
