It looks like the flap is supposed to fold over the A arm in the AIM, but on most photos I see posted, the lower part of the flap is on the inside of the engine compartment.
What way is correct?
This is how mine are.

IIRC, the staples are supposed to be stainless steel.
Nope. That's what most of the vendors will sell you, but they're incorrect, difficult to work with, and will get deductions in judging. The original Bostitch pedestal-mounted industrial staplers the plant used were fed by 25-pound spools of 16-ga. plain steel wire that were cut and formed into shape by the stapler just before it punched them through the flap and fiberglass.

I wish I had one of those machines Ive had new flaps for years but havent installed them because I know how difficult those staples are. Ive heard of others using wire or even paperclips.

I used the stainless staples from LIC when I installed my A-Arm flaps. I clamped the flaps in place and drilled from the body side through the flaps using the existing staple holes in the body. Then I inserted the staples through the flaps and bent them over using channel lock pliers and final crimp at the bend with a vice grip. Came out great.

I tried using the vendor supplied staples. I struggled mightily to bend them, got frustrated and switched to the same gauge aluminum wire. Frustration eliminated, but of course "not to code".
