only your high performance engines got the vin stamp. it wasn't until 1968 that all engines got the full vin stamp. it seems GM only stamped the high performance engines got stolen so it helped the insurance company's track them down.

Technically, it's "not" the right casting.

It's a Tonawanda block. How do you know?

Two things:

First, the assembly stamping is T1009S. The "T" stands for Tonawanda, NY. ALL small block Corvette motors were assembled in Flint in the 63 time frame.

The stamping on those blocks would begins with an "F".

Secondly, the casting date. Tonawanda motors have a "2 digit" casting date. In your case, it is 62, meaning 1962.

Flint/Saginaw cast blocks have a "1 digit" casting date, i.e. 2 for 62, 3 for 63 and so on.

I'll bet if you look at the block, you'll find many embossed and debossed "T's" on it too.

AND, I also believe that the casting number, the "870" number is smaller on Tonawanda blocks than it is on Flint blocks. I've got some pix somewhere.

Also, if you look on the front, you will see a 1/8th inch pipe thread galley plug on the passenger side above the timing cover on a Flint block. It isn't on a Tonawanda block.

Pull this out and you can read oil pressure there.
