i was looking at some old posts on outside mirrors and date codes. it stated that the outside mirrors all had a chevy emblem on the back. the one on my car does not have one. it has a 10 DMI 6 DATE CODE but no emblem. inside the base is 3839611. its the exact same as orig. but no emblem. do you guys think its a replacement or off another chevy, chevelle, etc. any mirror experts out there? THANKS
Part way through 67, Chevrolet changed the mirror head, removing the Bowtie emblem from the mirror. Chevrolet discountinued the one with the Bowtie, since they are identical otherwise. What you have is probably a GM service mirror produced in 76.

So the datecode on the mirror is probably a replacement also? the chrome is like new but the glass has some small scratches, so i thought i'd replace the glass. thats why i looked at the mirror to start with. i want get glass out of frame. it doesn't look like it has a retaining ring around the outside. so do i just brake the mirror out and glue a new one in?

67's used two mirrors - with and without the Bowtie; depends on the VIN. A November '66 car would have the mirror with the Bowtie; the plain mirrors didn't start showing up until about mid-January, and all '67 mirrors had the retaining ring holding the glass in place.

Push the glass into the mirror a little bit. You'll see the retaining ring.
Once you have the ring out, the glass will pop out.
At that point, you'll likely lose one or more of the little springs in the mirror.
My mirror has the bowtie, and I can see the retaining ring.
It also has 2-?MI-3 etched on the mirror glass and 6868611 on the inside of the stem.
Although I'm not sure if this is an original 64 mirror.(I was told it was...)
I can post a pic if you want.

no, you don't have to post a picture. i believe John! i was just kidding around with TheSaint.
64tux I dont know but the mirror on my car looks original to me
Perhaps the 64 did not have the Chevy emblem?
Your 64 should have a Bowtie head mirror on it.
The short base mirror with the Bowtie emblem was first used around March 1963 (VIN 11,000). All 63's after March and all 64, 65 and 66 Corvettes then used the same Bowtie mirror, as well as 67's through about VIN 10,500. After that, 67's used the exact same mirror, but without the Bowtie emblem in the head.
Until the Bowtie repros came out some years back, the only mirror available was the GM mirror without the Bowtie, and many of them ended up on 63-67 Corvettes.
By the way 64Tux, the dating on your mirror is October (the 10), with the "6" being either 1976, 86 or maybe 96. As JohnZ said, the plain head mirrors didn't start showing up until January 67, so the "6" couldn't be 1966.

my '65 had 27,000 mi and sat for maybe 40 years before being rescued. it has that mirror without the bowtie, maybe the one on your car is a replacement mirror?

This thread will be closed swiftly, since it is over 10 years old. The bowtie was present on mid year side view mirrors until 1967. Service replacement mirrors did not have the bowtie. So, OPs mirror, as he probably figured out 10 years ago is a Service replacement, probably dated 1976. Your mirror on your 65 is also a Service replacement.
