I was cleaning up my 3rd arm assembly and noticed some wear on one side of the ball (see picture). The ball measures 0.99 diameter on the unworn area and 0.96 diameter on the worn area.
Does it need to be replaced?
If yes, if you have done it, did you have to heat it before peaning or can I do it cold? I replaced the clutch cross shaft ball on the frame and pean it cold and it worked and seems solid.
I have replaced these while doing restorations. You should replace yours to prevent any play in your steering. you can cold work it. After pressing the new ball into the third arm place the head of the ball on a flat hard metal surface and pean the other end with a hammer. Carefully grind excess material off peaned side being careful not to damage third arm.

I've done one, and that is EXACTLY how I did it. Really pretty simple.
