Does anyone know why the back of the badge name plate on the instrument cluster gauges (fuel, oil, etc.) are painted green? I took my gauges apart to clean the lens and noticed that the green paint is brittle and falling off. I am wondering if I need to repaint them and if so, if there is a certain kind of paint I should use. I found this link that will help you see what I am talking about ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Corve...Q5fAccessories
I think the green color is to give a greenish color to the gauges when the light reflects off the paint. Since you have your gauges apart I would repaint it if the paint is falling off. (Even though it's a PIA)
The color was hard to match, but I went to an Ace hardware and found a can of Krylon "Satin Touch" series in Catalina Mist that was close. I doubt you would find that color in an auto parts store.
I think other options would be Seafoam Green, but I couldn't find it.

I don't know if the gauges on a '61 are hard to see at night, but if they are I would probably paint those parts a lighter color. They don't judge these cars at night anyway, so ...

Yes, I was talking about my '61. Despite replacing the bulbs in my instrument gauges last year, the lighting of my gauges is not great. I guess because the paint was so bad, that was affecting it.
