What is the best way to get to the back of the speedometer in the dash? It looks really tight and my hands are not tiny. I would guess I need to take the inner cable out and lube it. Or should I disconnect at the trans and take the inner cable out that way?

I can get them off with no problem. Sometimes I have to take tape and wrap it around my thumb, forefinger and index finger to give me a little more grip up there. Its a tight spot but you can get the cable off with a little patience. (Disconnect the battery first - there are lots of places for unintentional fireworks behind the dash!)

However you can only work the cable back so far under the dash before you have to deal with the rubber grommet where it goes through the dash panel (see pic).

The inner cable comes out from the dash NOT the trans.

I just did my speedometer and tach cables last week.I unscrewed both and dropped the cable just under the dash and pulled the inner cable out of both, doing the speedo first and reinstalling and then the tach.I haven't driven the car yet to find out if I got rid of the bounce on the speedo but the tach works great.

Look for any binding of the housing and if the inner cable is worn any where along the cable --if so replace the unit. Also lube the Speedo bushing
