Default 1965 Rear End Code Location

In researching my car, it appears the car was delivered with the standard 3:36 gears, but there are 3:08 gears in the rear. Is there a code somewhere to indicate what gears were installed in the rear at the factory. I'm trying to find out if they replaced the gears, or swapped the entire differential.

There should be a stamping on the bottom flange of your rear end. This is what is stamped on the bottom of my 1965 - AM 3 29 65 which translates to 3:36 posi built March 29 1965. A 3:36 non-posi would be stamped "AK" and then the assembly date.

When you say "bottom flange" do you mean on the bottom by the flange where the driveshaft attaches ?

I found it, but it says CJ4 16 64. The "CJ" looks like a 3.08 from a 63, but 4/16/64 ?

Looks like "CJ" was also a code for the 64 3:08. Since my car was built 12/16/64, looks like it is a leftover rear. Wonder why the invoice says 3:36.

I really doubt it was "left over" More likely, replaced by a previous owner

What invoice do you have?

NCRS offers a service that, for a $35 fee, they can give you the GM production date and dealer it was shipped to. I contacted the dealer, and he still had the original invoice. He read it to me, and is mailing me a copy. I thought he said it had the standard 3.36 rear. The car was then sold/traided to another dealer. I contacted them via email and am waiting to see if they have the invoice for their sale of the car.

I contacted the dealer where my cars was sold when new but they could not help me with the original invoice or anything at all.
