Default 66 alignment

The shop tells me it is impossible to properly align the car unless the rear trailing arm bolts can be loosened and the shims can be moved.
I would like some feedback on this.
It goes for caster and camber and toe.
knock kneed in the rear

That's correct - the shim packs at the trailing arm pivot pockets determine rear toe-in; if the pivot bolts are corroded/frozen to the bushing sleeves and can't be loosened to allow the shims to be shifted to set toe-in, you'll have to deal with that issue before having it aligned.

Sitting on the inside edge of the tires is camber, not toe. And a little of that is normal in the rear.
Chances are pretty good that toe will check OK. Mine has used the same shim pack for 35 years, even after replacing the TA bushings this last fall. If you are happy with the condition of the bushings, I'd ask them to give you the toe readout before they start the rest of the alignment. If it's OK the rest is easy...

Take a measurement of your rear toe, if it's close, you can adjust the camber as necessary faily easily with a camber guage. You want the tires riding slightly on the inside edge per the specs. Pilot Dan
