Yeah, that is strange. 63 had an SC for 250HP auto, and SD for 300 HP auto but no plain S that I know of.

Anyone have any idea how much this bare block would weigh?

Engine Codes
Passenger cars had 1 character suffixes, Corvettes had 2 character suffixes, and I think trucks had 3 character suffixes in the late 50's and 60's.

I have a '66 Chevy truck with a 283, it has a 2-letter suffix. ("WA" - 283/175hp 2 bbl)

That's correct - the single-character "S" suffix was used for many years from '57-up for truck and passenger car Powerglide applications. Corvette engines never used a single-character suffix.
