It's time to replace my mufflers and tail pipes on my 62 250 HP base engine.. My current mufflers are not factory the best I can tell. Thinking about buying the Magnaflow round off road sold by corvette central or the ovals. I would buy the complete system only a little more $$ than if I just brought the mufflers and tail pipes.
My base question is my car is pretty quite right now don't mind adding a little sound but don't want to get to loud.
Have you heard of Allen's Corvette Exhaust ? They offer muffler options and I had a good experience with them when I put mufflers and pipes on my 62 a few years ago. Just Google allens exhaust.
I have the off-road (round) mufflers on my '61 and they have a perfect sound IMO. Nice pulse at an idle; low-key growl at mid-RPM and pretty much the classic muscle car sound when wide open...
The downside of the stock exhaust is the small diameter of course -- not the best performance-wise...

When I was restoring my '62 I went with a stainless steel exhaust system because I was only going to do the job once. It was custom bent locally and I went with the off road mufflers. Like Frankie said, a nice low grow. they don't sound "tinny" or noisy. I too have a 250 HP base engine and I am very please with the results!
I have the Allen's aluminized full system with the off road mufflers on my 340 horse 62. Fit perfectly and below is a little clip of the sound. I don't think it is quite as loud as the original off road set-up, but in my opinion sounds great.
I have the aluminized full system from Corvette Central. I am real happy with that system also. I did go with the original over style mufflers in my '62 250hp. They are quiet, maybe a little too quiet, but the neighbors like me.
I went with Smithys glass pacs from Reds, one of the hot rod suppliers in Hemmings. Very deep tone, not tinny or ricey at all. They make various lengths and the smaller ones (24") I think are a bolt in, the 26" require a little pipe trimming and are some quieter. I have used both lengths and next time am going back to the shorter ones. bob
