I took it apart tonight. One of the worm gears needs replacing. They are 3 worm gears, one of which is inside the speedo cup. If it is replaced the speedo needs to be recalibrated, meaning it neeeds to be magnitized and/or degaussed. There is a magnetic field that needs to be dialed in to calibrate.
The gear replacement is easy, the calibration is not.
I will either send it out or leave the odometer as is.
They all break. The trip odometer puts too much pressure on the drive gears. If it is repaired with plastic gears, you are lucky to get 5K or so out of it before it goes again.
We used to look for and rob school busses and trucks of their metal gear sets, because the metal ones were not available. Someone may be making the metal ones now. If so you might get 50K or so out of them.
For this reason, and others, low mileage Corvettes of that era are all " suspect" to say the least.
