I don't think you'll find any headers that bolt up to the stock side pipes
directly. You just need a muff shop to fab a section from the collector
to the side pipe. Use flex pipe to get you to the shop.
Howdy John,
I ran a set on my '66 small block for years, still got them in a box somewhere. As the other man said, they don't bolt directly to your sidepipes, a trip to the muffler shop is needed to finish the job. If you use these headers be ready to tighten them up weekly and replace the gaskets affton, as they WILL leak. The Hedmans come two pieces per side. To ease instulation I welded nuts and bolts at the mounting holes, made maintenance a lot easier. Good luck, Bill
About how long are the primaries? I am confused as to where the headers actually intersect with the sidepipe. Do the headers drop down lower than the manifolds (I would hope)? Do they kick out to the side, or is the collector to sidepipe connection in the vertical plane?
John W I have the Hedman headers on my '67 just as shown in the photo. I posted last week to someone about the installation, it's as described here. One exception, in the 9 years they have been on the car only once did I have to replace a gasket. I check them once a year, maybe twice and I rarely have to tighten anything. This I think is because I drive my car at least twice a week, I believe this helps to keep the expansion and contraction uniform. Unless Hedman has adjusted the design in the last 9 years, they will not fit w/PS or the manual damper. Check carefully! Having them coated by Jet Hot is a good idea, this makes them last. That's my story. Hope this helps.
John,
I have a set of #68280 headers hanging on my garage wall. I have been told by the tech depts. at Headman, Jegs and Summit that these are designed to bolt up to factory side pipes.
I think that you should be able to find several members using them. Try posting in the C3 Forum also.
This set came off of a friends 63', he used them for about 6 months. I was thinking of putting them on my 76'.
On my Chevelle I have Hooker Super Comps. I have run Headmans and with both I use two gaskets, siliconed together. Makes a better seal then just one.
If you plan on leaving them bolted up you can silicone all sides. I use the copper RTV. This keeps them from blowing out. I like to un-bolt my headers on my Chevelle once in a while. (Last time was at a fish fry at my house at 2am. Neighbors did not think it was funny).

John I have a set of new S.S. side pipes that we fabbed up to fit Sanderson Block Huggers on a B.B. We run them about 4,000 miles. They are stock and will bolt right to a mid year. I'll send pic's if your interested.
Here's a set of those same Hedmans (Jet-Hot coated) on my tube-frame Grand Sport (pic taken during engine pre-run/cam break-in); factory sidepipes will NOT "bolt-up" to them - factory sidepipes ran right up to the stock manifold outlets, and need muffler shop surgery, flanges welded on, etc. in order to "bolt up" to the Hedmans. Sidepipes in the pic are custom-made, 4", wide open - brought a whole new meaning to the word "loud" :D
Jim we are moving along but I have just been so busy with Hockey, and this summer wheather. We got the driver side done to-night we added a Moroso pan for more ground clearence so that changed things abit. I think we are going to ceramic coat the pipes once we finish them. Have you decided what mode of transportation your coming with in June? I'll be sending you pic's the next couple of days, watch your e-mail.
Johnz - did you ever come up with a good solution for mufflers inside your pipes? I'm just starting on my exhaust, will be 3 1/2 pipe pretty similar to your old setup, except the headers have to come across over the frame, there is no clearance below it. I've been thinking one of the 3 baffle inserts and a shear cone at the exit. I know the boat exhaust (old dry setup) with a single baffle was still too loud for street use.
Nope, never solved it - local cops tolerated it, just said "don't get on it around town", and I didn't :D . There's an outfit now called "Spiral Baffles" or something like that in Ohio (Akron area?) that apparently makes very effective baffles designed to be inserted in sidepipes. Maybe another member has some contact info for them.
