66 , 327/300hp, power glide.
we are searching for the cause of an engine vibration and my mechanic seems to think the wrong balancer is on the car.
What is the correct balancer?
all apart and nowhere to go.

A 327 should take a neutral balanced balancer and flex plate/flywheel. As long as the harmonic damper (balancer) is neutrally balanced, it's size won't make a difference on engine smoothness (except for damping of higher frequency crankshaft torsional vibrations). You might make sure that it is not so old that it's failing (slipping). If you replace it, make sure it's the correct vintage - the keyway should be aligned perfectly with the TDC mark (slot).
The correct balancer is 3896903. I found this one several years ago, although it was difficult to locate, as it was only in use for two years. Believe the low-HP '67 Camaro also used this p/n, so you might check with those vendors, too.
Great pics!
Note too there is a specific timing cover for that balancer. If you have the original cover still, you cannot get an 8" ( most common type) balancer on the crankshaft nose without interference from the timing tab. The 6" balancer is also a press-on-only balancer (no bolt to the crank nose).

The "balancer" has nothing to do with balancing the engine or engine vibration - it's a torsional damper, which is why it's called a "damper assy." on the drawing. Unless you have a counterweighted damper from a 400 small-block on it, the damper won't cause any engine vibration - the stock damper is neutral-balanced.
Have you run the engine with the fan belt removed to see if your accessory drive is contributing to the vibration? Under what conditions and rpm do you feel the vibration?
