Just pick that tar-like stuff off the switch.
Than you can get into the switch to clean it up and fix it.
Goop it up with silicone when you have it put back together.
Sorry I can't be more detailed but it's been more than 10 years since I fixed my switch.
It was easy.
P.S. Should either of you gentlemen decide to get new switches, I could sure use the connector off an old backup light switch.

I had the same problem several years ago. I just soldered them back together.
