My '61 drum brakes have started to squeek. THey have never made a sound before yesterday. This only happens when the car is going slower than three MPH. It is sometimes loud, sometimes I can barely hear it. No sound when above three MPH. I can also feel a little vibration in the pedal when this happens.
I have always been told that when you hear your brakes, there is a problem. The guys in the office say since it is only at extremely slow speeds, that it is nothing to worry about, it is normal. Most of these guys have never seen shoes and drums!
What do you think? Should I bring it in for servicing or is this normal?
Alan - I'm an "overkill" kind of guy when it comes to safety items. I assume you know that these cars do not have self-adjusting brakes.....might pay to adjust all four wheels before doing anything else. While down there look closely for any signs of fluid leaks and then top off the master cylinder.
If you still get some noise and pedal "float" have a mechanic check them out...preferably an "old timer"... Just takes a minute to ****** off the wheels and have a look-see.
.................and if you don't see anything worn to cause metal/metal, either blow out the brake dust with air (wear a mask) or rinse the brake dust off with brake cleaner. That should take care of your noise, for awhile.
