Default Taillight question

I have reverse lights, but not the transmission switch. I do not seem to have the wires for the switch either.
I have the dash out and do not see any wires that do not have a home.

So, I'm thinking of just going with four red taillights.

I don't know how they should act. That is, do all four light up on brakes? Inside or out on park?
I haven't traced the wires from the lights yet, I'm still in the dash/engine part of the refresh.
Or, am I just asking for trouble?
Thanks
Jim

If you go 4 red, all four light up bright with brakes, both bright for directionals on either side, and all 4 light up for parking/headlights.

The 2 wire connector for your B/U light switch is in the engine compartment. It comes out of the same hole as the wiper wires and should only be a few inches long and is secured to the firewall with a clip behind the left side ignition shield.

Thanks for the replies.

Nope, nothing there. No switch on the shifter either.
That's why I'm thinking of going with four reds.

It is possible your car did not come with backup lights originally. The main dash harness AND the rear harness must match for things to work correctly. If you have a no back up light main harness, then go with 4 reds in the rear and it should be fine. Pilot Dan

I had the same sort of situation. My '66 had backup lights, but no switch or harness on the transmission. Check you inner taillight assemblies to see if they take a single filament or a double filament bulb. If it's a single filament (backup light assembly) then you can either hook them to the taillights, or do as I did, hook them to the brake light switch. So I have four brake lights. They don't blink with the turn signals, only the outer lamps blink, but that's OK with me. I'd rather have people know that I'm braking.
