Default 67 Electrical problem

I have replaced the battery, I have replaced the old voltage regulator with a new electronic Wells VR715, I have also replace the dash wiring harness and still every time I start the car the ameter shows in the middle. Soon as I turn on the lights it drops to close to -20. As I push in the cigarette lighter it drops to -10.

What else can I possibly look at thats causing the drop.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Why would you say that? It's obvious that the battery isn't being charged, either because of a bad alt. or a wiring issue since the V/R has been ruled out. With just the motor running and no accessories on, the needle should be close to the middle. It takes very little amps to run the ignition.

at idle I would think so the alt is not charging. rev the engine up then what is it.

Default Charging

Put a multimeter on the battery. It should read 12.25 to12.75 volts before you start. Start the engine and measure the voltage at the alt. It should read 14.5 to 14.75 volts at the alt. With the engine running, check the voltage at the battery. It should measure a drop of about .5 volts at the battery. If all of this is within specs, all should be well. If you have a 37 amp. alt and you put on the lights and cig. lighter, the reading you mentioned are normal. Jerry

I have 37 amp alts. on 2 of my cars and it is not normal for them to discharge that much at an idle. What the OP is describing would be normal for a generator and is exactly how my 60 acts at an idle and starts charging at approx. 1000 RPM.
