64 vert the starter engauges breifly when engine is turned off. sounds like the bendix engauges but does not crank engine and of course it only happens sometimes. I have replaced starter and the ignition switch twice with no change. It wont do it enless engine was running. Any suggestions. Dave
No help on this one, sounds like an electrical gremlin, if the Bendix engages the engine should turn with the starter, for the starter to freespin the Bendix is not fully engaged.
I am guessing this Starter always starts the car normally and this only acts up on shut down? Wow, some new challenge every day, please keep us posted on the cure.
This problem has been here before.... Do a search for "starter shutdown" (no quotes) and you'll find quite a bit of discussion. As I recall, it turned out to be a bad alternator.
Starter clearence checks out fine. Only happens on shutdown. Have replaced ignition switch twice with no change. I am looking now at alternator possibly feeding back thru to ignition switch thru acc. brown wire, Dave

Check the wires on the starter, if power is hitting the post on the solenoid below the post that the + battery cable is attached to, the starter will spin without the bendex engaging. Pos. cable could be twisted and hitting it.
Well after sitting down and studying the wiring diagram I have finally found the cause. Its in the ignition switch matter af fact its in all three ignition switches. I can now make it happen eveytime I shut off the car if I want. If I shut the car off while its running and switch it to the lock position the starter bendix will snap. I can make it hit hard or just a small tap depending on how fast I go from running to lock. If I go from running to off and pause then go to lock it will not happen. I put a meter to every switch I have between s terminal and acc, and sure enough there is a momentary contact when switching from off to lock. The slower I turn switch the longer the contact last. Now my question is any other better source for ignition switches than made in mexico. Dave
Standard ignition and Borg Warner are usually available in every town. These may be the brands you have tried and had your failures with. Parts are usually made in production runs and date codes are usually on the box by the part number. When you run into issues like this the whole production run is usually affected. Look for newer or older date codes and you might get around your issue with another production run. Report your findings to the manufacturer, they will usually respond. For sure switch brands if possible and if that is not possible switch date codes.
