Default Restomods at Mecum auction

WOW, looks like the C2 restomods were doing very well at Mecum. Stock looking body C2's with upgraded technology appears to be the craze now.

That is maining because most of the stock C2 and C1s were not that great. There were a few that would hold up and forst class standards but those were few in numbers. Plus, there were lots more C2s and C1s that were not televised...

Now the Resto Vette we saw were for the most part first class cars. You did have a few that didnt make the grade but most were really good I thought.

Gen 1 Camaros were selling good abd bringing good money as were some Mopars. The highend Mustangs were a little slow as was the Street Rods. Speaking of which, some of the Street Rods we saw were absolutly mind blowing cars, just didn't attract the high bids...

Chicken George is just as goofy in person as he is on TV ...LOL

I saw Jim Toma's 64 sell for 132,500 via online viewing on Friday. I really liked that car. However Saturday I had DVR'd (in fact every day) the 3 hour telecast. Saw what appeared to be a really nicely done 65 black coupe go thru and not sell. I think bidding got to about 110,000 and car was no sale.

Did you get a chance to look it over and if so, any opinions to share with us on the quality of it and how it compared to others that you saw.

You know, we looked over all the C1 and C2s but I don't remember details. There was only a handfull of cars that really stuck in my mind. The problem is there are so many mind blowing cars at the auction it's really hard to remember them all. The maroon 67 BB that sold for 102K was the best C2 on the lot period. There was a 33 Vicy Street Rod that was incredable too that did not sell. Any some reat Caddys too. Just too much to digest really.

Default some quick thoughts for now

Hi guys,

As many of you know I had my car at Indy and sold it. This will be short, as I need to move my trailer out of the fairgrounds today. I'll be driving north, offline for a couple of days. I was only following the "high end stuff"
( as the poster above, to many cars to remember). Here goes:

$157,500 -S128--67' 435hp (a Naber Brothers car)

$150,000 -S119--63' SWC fuelie ( a Ken Hansen car)

$132,500 -F139-- 64' resto rod (my car)

$130,000 -F262-- 67' 400hp (appeared to roll off the production line, most impressive restored car in my eyes) (did not sell)

$120,000 -F280-- 66' 425hp (it just didn't pop out for me)

$117,000 - T232-- 67' L89 coupe (?????????????)

$115,000 -S175 -- 65' resto rod (nice body,LS7,older build)(did not sell)(LOL)

$109,000 - F131 -- 64' resto rod ( 67' front clip, no more comments, cause I can't say any nice) Buyer ??????

$105,000 - S158 -- 58' resto rod (nice car, LT1, older build)(did not sell)(LOL)

$102,500 - S160 -- 60' resto rod (very nice build)(did not sell)

$102,500 - F255.1 -- 67' resto rod (a Hedges car, a fool parted with his money for this one)

$100,000 - S130 -- 65' fuelie (black coupe, nice car)

Most surprising:

$135,000 - S117 -- 56' Chevy Hardtop (resto rod, Morrision chassis, BBC)(show car)

$127,500 - S62 -- 55' Chevy Convert (resto rod LS 2)(show car)

resto rod = aftermarket chassis w/ current suspension, not a stock frame w/ C4 parts pasted on.

LOL = unreasonable reserve

everyone was expecting more, you heard this before, "it's the economy stupid"

Jim

The Nabers car S128 must have been an older resto; it just didn't stand out to me. F262 was beautiful from 10 feet but the Marlboro shade was way off factory, stinger poorly painted, terrible headlight bucket gaps. Gorgeous color scheme, though. The best 67 there was S171, another Marlboro 435 that sold for $102,500. There was no mention of docs with that car, but the paint and body were just beautiful.

Yes Nick and we were both looking at these cars very hard. The odd thing was hardly any of the 67s we saw bragged about docs and/or a tank sheet etc. Yes, some did have that but many did not. If the 67 BBs were fake they sure did a great job as things looked to be in order on these cars. Who knows, bottom line, it was a blast to see all those cars in one place... Some great stories too

Guess what I was trying to say is there is an obvious fan base for restomods. It use to be looked down on if you restomodded a car but for sure that mind set has changed. I personally have always liked original looking or period correct with some nice tasteful updates.

I like them both for different reasons. The main point is we all love our cars no matter what... That's what makes this a great hobby.

SupremeDeluxe,
Yes, the Nabers Brothers car, kinda just sat there (2007 restoration).
F262 did look more burgundy than maroon. I never looked close, but walked by many times on the way to my car. My personal "stock" favorite was T208, a 67' 350 hp roadster in Lynndale Blue w/ teal blue interior (sold for $63K) (looked at car, but not examined it)

I totally agree when looking at the cars and seeing what has or has not been changed.

But for driving, I personally like the modern updates.

I would guess the reason for this gradual change in importance is that the oncoming younger generation of new buyers appears to be much less obsessed with originality & pedigree.

Rather, they want the look, but buy cars that have much better driveability, less maintenance, speed, safety, and yes, gas mileage, rather than buying expensive museum pieces, or cars that are rarely driven and/or always need work.
