Default Track a VIN

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to track down a 1958 Corvette I had in 1958 if I know the 1958 Illinois license plate number but nothing else.
Mecum Auctions has a black 1958 Vette coming up to auction and I am sure it is the car I bought new in 1958 and sold in 1959. I want it back if it is my car but how do I find out ?
Thanks

If you could get the Illinois DMV to give you a serial number based on that plate ( since you were the owner) you would have a better chance. There will be a lot of 58's out there that you will swear were yours.

Odds are it won't happen, though. Most states don't retain the information that long.

If you can remember the name of your insurance company back in 1958, contact them and see if they have the VIN number on the policy.

Plan B would be to do a title search on the car you are thinking might be your old car.

Either one is a long shot. Good luck.

Possibly you could contact Mecum and they may help you get in touch with the current owner. Perhaps he has history of the car that may give you some clues if it was indeed your old car !!! Keep us posted on this.

I still have the same Allstate Insurance so I will try them but thats a long stretch.
There were a lot of black Corvettes but how many had a black cove instead of common silver, and had the 270 H.P. , dual 4 barrel, 4 speed options? That narrows it down a lot.
Thanks guys

10% of '58 production were 270's (978 units), and there were 294 cars painted solid black.

Since there were only 9168 58's made and this one is 6338, that means it was made about 70% through the production cycle. What was your purchase date. That might narrow it down or rule it out.
BTW, I'm just down the 5 in San Clemente.

The car is presently titled in Florida. Go here and plug in the vin#.

https://www7.hsmv.state.fl.us/vehiclecheck/inquiry.jsf

It states that it was titled in FL in 2004, and the previous title state was Ohio.

I do not know if you can get any other info from Florida. Tom's idea to ask Mecum to ask the owner for more info may be the best way.

Now that we have the VIN I was able to trace this car back to Bob McDorman and Pro Team Corvette sales in Ohio.

Looks like Pro Team got it from Bob McDorman in 2004.
