Use a hoist with the tilter and 3 or 4 friends. Assuming it a C-2, some people leave the distributor out, manifolds off, the water pump off and maybe the fan shroud/radiator assembly. Dennis
Most swear by the tilter but the few times I have used one, I found that it typically was too far forward to work well. I've usually put a chain on the engine such that it was balanced and could be tilted manually without too much effort (end chains relatively close) or by using a small chain binder to pull up the desired side to tilt when I wanted.
You need to be slightly tilted going it and just before sliding it back, level out. For me, the chain binder on the rear chain worked well. The engine was tilted when hanging, and then as I needed to level, I pulled the binder tight.
I JUST went through this myself. With just one friend, it was really no problem to reinstall the trans and engine as a unit. There are a number of threads on the subject that are very helpful.

When the engine/transmission assembly goes in and out, you need to be able to tilt it and hold it at some pretty severe angles. And, you need to be able to control it very carefully going to, from, and at those angles. A tilter is usually required to do that.
That said, every time I did this job, the tilter sucked, and caused more problems than it solved. I ended up scratching the paint on the firewall, engine, and radiator support. Maybe I would have had better luck with a better tilter.
I've pulled/inserted a SB w/Tremec by myself 2 or 3 times. I used the typical engine hoist that all places carry and used it from the front, not side. It can be a very close fit with the hoist. I used a tilter and had to adjust the angle once I clear the front end. I also used a floor jack to let the tranny come to rest on so it could be kept at the same height and clear the cross member while the front of the engine is lowered and the tilt is taken back out. No headers, distributor, carb, radiator or shroud were in place.
As Chris said, the tilter can be a little funky, just don't be impatient.

If notice, the starter is missing on one pic, so the pics were from 2 different installs....

[QUOTE=BrettG;1577866173]With or without a tilter?
any pointers?[/QUOTE
I used a tilter. Same everything that Redred65cpe used. Cranking the tilter was a little tough. I found on the return trip that greasing the threaded rod and rail helped a lot.

Now that I think of it, I wish had an air ratchet (I do now) when I was changing the angle on the tilter.
