Got to change the oil in the 63 L-76 (340 HP). I still use the canister with filter. I have been using Quaker State, and was told to stay away from the Synetic Oils as they are too thin and will leak. I understand that I should get oil with ZDDP. and it should be 10-40. I have totally stock 63 L-76 340HP engine... Suggestions?

Old Wives tale. I've been using Mobil 1 15w-50 in my 427/435 but it doesn't see much use due to worn out suspension. I plan on going to their Turbo Diesel oil which is what I've started using in everything else I have (lawn mowers to motorhome).
Here's a link to what's in the various Mobil 1 oils. There are other good oils, but I always liked that you could easily get tech info on Mobil 1 oils.

you heard right, synthetic oil does have a smaller molecular structure than conventional oil, that's why it has superior lubrication qualities, that is also why it tends to leak out of older engines more readily.

Sounds like pseudo-science to me. If the molecules are smaller, the viscosity would be lower--------thus not meeting whatever API viscosity the oil is being sold as.
Back in the day, the Ferrari owners' manual specified only one oil, Shell Rotella STRAIGHT 40-weight! Had to visit the truck stop to buy a case (12-quart sump).
Synthetics are a superior oil. This is why I have just changed to Mobil 1 15-40. My 63 has that very small drip, that I think all very old cars that are driven seem to have. I have seen no difference from switching this year. I guess worse case, if it does start leaking, I will just switch back.

I use the Mobil-1 in my '59 w/ no leaks. *But Note: only the 15w-50 has the ZDDP needed!
“Nominal Zinc Level (PPM) = 1300 Boosted, higher viscosity, fully synthetic formula designed for performance vehicles. HT/HS applications. Racing and Flat tappet applications.”
The ZDDP in the Shell Rotella has been reduce and is no longer "good enought".
[QUOTE=427435;1577916054]Mobil 1 doesn't come in a 15w-40. It does come in a 15w-50. Their 5w-40 diesel oil also has plenty of ZDDP and gives better start-up lubrication.

Wrong. CJ-4-rated Rotella has 1100-1200 ppm zinc/phos and is more than adequate for any OEM valvetrain. Different story if you have an aftermarket cam and Gonzo valve springs.
