Default C2 with 283?

Somebody was telling me this morning they knew of someone who had a '63 split window with a 283 and a 4 speed. I always thought this year was only offered with different versions of a 327. Am I wrong? Could it have been special order?

Weren't 63's offered with three different 327s? L84 being the baddest? (can't remember hp or RPOs for other two)

Now, could it have been installed after the fact to replace a blown up engine?? Maybe?

But definitely not offered from the factory or an option to be ordered...

The way he talked it came from the factory, because a red flag popped up in my mind immediately, and I'm pretty sure I said "from the factory with a 283?" and he said yes, and I said "I thought they were only offered with a 327 in that year"

..and he again reassured me that it had a 283 from the factory..

There were 4 engines in 63, all 327 cu in. 3 had 4 bbl carbs, the 250hp, 300hp and the 340hp. The forth engine was the 360hp, which used fuel injection. The last year the 283 was used in a Vette was 1961.

A lot of Corvettes have ended up with 283's over the years, as well as 307's, 305's, 350's, 400's, etc. People break engines and replace them with whatever is convenient, or cheapest.

The guy you were talking too, probably knows someone that owns one of the first Corvettes built also. One of the ones with a steel body!

Would the factory have installed it as a special order? I'm guessing not, because you say the last year they were in Vettes was '61..

don't laugh too hard,,, right before i got drafted in 67,,, i was poking around teh back of a ford lot, and there was a white 60 vette with the hood ajar,,, so, i had to inspect it,, i lifted teh hood and there was a 409 stuffed in it, too high for the hood to close all teh way,,, they wanted $1000.00 for it, but i was on my way overseas,,, too bad, because i had a 58 impala convertible , i just sold teh 348 out of, and was going to put a 283 i had just rebuilt into,,,,,
i guess you can see where i'm going with this!!!!!!!!!
luckily, i came back,,,, but the corvette was gone......
