And some people took their vettes and installed a station wagon rear too, at the time I even thought it was cool, what was I thinking? As far as the split, wouldn't trade it for a 64'

Default Still friends .......

I knew I'd step on some toes..... IMO ... for every midyear made after the 63 SWC...... all the valuable feature can be reproduced ....faked re-stamped, aged , re-papered original L-71 L-89 L-88.??... The hobby has been hijacked for the all mighty $$$. NCRS helped and hurt in the name of the $50 "Correct" drain plug.

Yes I'm guilty...... for I'm also building a ZL-1 SRIII 67 roadster.... BUBBA .....But anyone can do that!
Don't get me wrong I love ALL midyears. But average civilians recognize the SWC................. without any old pedigree sticker

BS....This URBAN LEDGEN has got to stop. Yes only a few did this, in comparison to over 10,500 Coupes made, maybe just maybe about 25 had the rear cut out. In all my years of working on and being around the Split Window, I have come across 1 only 1 that had the window removed and replaced with plexiglass because it was used for drag racing. I have NEVER heard of a DEALER doing this modification, there was a shop in LA and one in Detriot that did a few. I think more read about it in the Hot Rod Magazine that published how it was done, then actually did it.

I have a 63 and have NO problem looking out the rear window, what bothers me more is not right (passenger) side mirror.

Sorry for releasing like this, but this is passed on and it is pure BS.

Maybe a market for repro splits...
It would and is extremely difficult to put the split back on. First of of the split window's spine is MOLDED into the rear half of the car. So if you had to put one back you would have to glass it back on, and it would never retain the same strenght as one that is molded. Second you would have to get it exact, as if it was off by the slightest bit your glass would be higher on one side then the other, the trim would not fit right, and it would look odd. Finally, the spine has the center welt that runs up the back along the roof line. You would have to recreate that on piece welt perfect as it is one long piece molded into the glass.

I know this because a friend of mine bought a race car 63 that was used for drag racing with the split missing and it had the awful conversion to make it look like a 64, but it was done for racing as it had a plexiglass rear window. He bought the split and tried to glass it back on, and this guy was an expert in fiberglass. He never could get it right, removed it and just used the one piece glass. It was a horror to try to get even and put the welt back on, never could get it right.

I seen him struggle with this for six months and did the process three times with no good results, even the las time he did it, the down pressure when putting the flashing (rubber) and Stainless trip back on cause crack in the fiberglass where it was joined on the top and bottom, never got it right.

This is more BS. You cannot fake a BB where it cannot be identified as a fake.

With the right paperwork you can fake anything.

I had an Ermine White/Red '63 coupe for an entire weekend (that's a long story) and I found myself constantly looking at that split from the rear view mirror. I didn't need to, I just wanted to, it is such a wild feature of the car. As far as blind spots are concerned, wheraes I had no real problem with the obstruction in the centre of the back glass I did experience a larger than average number of interested onlookers driving their cars directly in my blind spot. I can blame them, it's one of the best positions to get that iconic view of the spined coupe !

Ray (currently lumbering around in a coupe with that huge, dull one piece back glass .... )

While the paperwork is important, it's the broach marks on the engine block which cannot be faked. A quick high res picture of the engine stamp pad off to Al Grenning and you WILL know whether or not the car is a fake - period.

Not any more; NCRS can now verify or debunk paperwork. It's not part of the judging process, but is provided as a separate member service.

40 years with my 63 coupe and the split is of no consequence.

Any 63-67 coupe has poor rear visibility with that big bulkhead and no side mirror.

To each his own.

Wonder how split window VW owners feel ?

A one piece back window means fewer parts and cost to the finance and manufacturing guys.

I have a passenger side mirror on my 63. My car is not stock but the body is, from what I read on here is that stock 63's didn't come with a passenger side mirror and I guess it wasn't an option. Am I right or wrong?

That is correct... one mirror from the factory. Passenger side was dealer installed.

Just because the engine was decked, doesn't necessarily mean the engine was not the original. It's these details that make me a non numbers kinda a guy. If your a real collector and care about stuff like that, I would pull the original out and put it on a stand if that were the case because I like to drive them, not just look at them.

This looks a lot like the tail of my convertible, and I'll tell you it looks better without the bumpers! (to me, I did it)

I'd like some rubber-tipped chrome nerf bars like that car.
