1957 Progress Pics - Need help with Starter installation
It's been a while since I posted progress pics of my 57 Fuelie project. Just a few small things left to button up the chassis & drivetrain phase of the project.
I need some help from the experts on the forum. I ordered a rebuilt dated starter from CC and received it last week. I got up early to install this morning and couldn't figure out what I have. I received a 1107664 Delco Starter, three starter bolts and a starter brace. When I tried to put the starter into position, there is no way it would bolt up. Here is a pic of the starter mount on the block/flywheel and pics of the starter.
Did the rebuilder put a later starter nose on the starter that I received?
Thanks in advance

Yep, it has the wrong nose. By the way, you're doing a beautiful job. Don't forget the front ground straps. Are you having it judged after completion or a very, very nice driver?

Looking great! As said, totally the wrong snout, that sucks.
Can you do me a favor? Why you have your car at this point, can you take some pictures for me of the drivers side of your powerglide? I need to get a visual on the shifter assembly, the shifter rod, the lever, the neutral switch setup, the kickdown lever, etc. It would help me ALLOT with getting my late '56 (which is a '57 setup too) PG put back correctly. Any pictures of your brake pedal and assembly I could really use to. I have an assembly manual but pictures are always better.
I also see you painted it black. I'm trying to figure out what color mine should be painted that would be correct. How did you settle on doing it in black? I can't find much real information on this...
Thanks!
Alex

Thanks for the kind words, it helps to keep me moving on this project! I am completing the car to factory specs as correctly as I can. When I get in a pinch, the forum members have been very good to point me in the right direction. The radial tires & 15" wheels look good in the photos, but are rollers for the build process. The stainless exhaust system won't score any judging points, but it came with the project and seemed too nice to sell.
Since it's a radio delete car, no shielding to worry about. Now you have me thinking about the ground straps. I need to check in Noland's book or the judging manual to see if ground straps were installed at the factory on radio delete cars, but would appreciate your insight.
With respect to the starter, I'll get on the phone with CC on Tuesday morning to discuss the problem of the wrong nose cone on the correct date coded starter they shipped.
I need to install the fuel line and the starter, and waiting for a few backordered items related to the Powerglide neutral safety switch. The only big job left is to put the windshield assembly together so that the body man can check the fit. The fuelie system is restored but needs calibration. I didn't want to have it calibrated and installed until it comes back from paint. (I am tempted to go ahead and set it on the engine for pics as motivation).

Alex,
I'll send you some detailed photos of my powerglide unit, linkage & shifter assembly this weekend. I can send a pic of the brake pedal assembly also. I am waiting for a few backordered items related to the neutral safety switch linkage and if you can wait a few days, I should have the correct 57 kickdown linkage installed next week.
With respect to finish for the powerglide, your right, there isn't much information out there. Nothing is noted in the judging manual and I couldn't find anything specific in Noland Adams book either. I searched the NCRS technical discussion archives and found a post from 3/1/07 inquiring about powerglide finish. Search the terms "powerglide paint" and look at the 6th thread down- "57 vette powerglide finish".
Based upon information from that search, I painted my powerglide unit flat black.

Sounds good! Funny, I found that same post and I was going to paint mine black based on that too and the fact that the unit I have still has most of it's original black paint to back that up. Did you go with a flat or a semi-gloss? My case paint seems flat but the paint on the dipstick tube is semi-gloss for sure.
I can wait until you get the back ordered parts of course, thank you! Actually the 55-56 kickdown linkage is different than the '57, I was really just needing a picture of the kickdown lever as it's attached to the shaft on the housing of the trans just for reference.

You will need the ground straps, and it would be easier to install them now. Your forward wiring harness will have a Black and White ground wire that will ground to the drivers side valve cover. Your battery cable will need the ground from the engine also, so you need a good ground from the straps.

Looks terrific! The generator adjusting brace should be semi-gloss black - it was installed at St. Louis starting in mid-1955.

I would assume they would be the same.
those were flat to semi black
the tail shaft housing had a portion un-painted./ it was covered by a shipping cover.
