Judging? You need to have the correct numbers and dates, and most re-manufactured ones won't have that.
Looking stock for local shows? Most rebuilt alternators will look close enough. It depends on the level of show.
Like John said, these basic alternators were used on a million cars, so finding a basic one isn't hard.
Functionality. There are numerous alternators that will work. the main thing you will decide is if you want the correct number even if dates are wrong, a number that was from that year even if not correct for your car, or any stock external regulator Delcotron alternator (1963 to 1968).
You could install a '69 up internal regulator alternator or one of the one-wire alternators from most hot hot shops, but then you need to understand the wiring system much better than you probably do so that you can wire it in place. I'd recommend you stay away from this option.
If you are just looking for a functional alternator to run the car, unless Eckler's is down the street from you, there is no point to ordering one from there when you probably have a NAPA, CarQuest, O'Reilly's, Advanced Auto, Auto zone, and who knows what else within a couple of miles of your house.
