C1 of Year Finalist (appearance mods) 2019
Main reason people took them off was to save weight! Probably over a hundred pounds with all the brackets and hardware.
Unfortunately it was kind of anti productive except for drag racing. The lighter front end with no bumpers to give a little down force, created a "lift" problem at high speeds. I can personally attest to this, making a chin spoiler a necessity. At about 110mph my modded 66 used to get so light in front you could move the steering wheel a half a turn and hardly change directions. I only experienced that once......scared the crap out of me!
I'm just lovin' all the comments here about the missing bumper. That's what I'm on here for, to learn all I can about the C2. You guys really know your stuff. I think I have to agree with the majority on here...I think I like it without the bumper also. Plus, it's going to save me a lot of money not to put those back on right now at about $1,000.
Here in VA you not only have an annual state inspection ($16.00) you also have an annual $26.00 fee for garaging your car in the city you live in. Used to have two stickers on the windshield but they changed it to only one, the inspection sticker, and DMV now collects the city fee (instead of the city treasurer) along with the registration fee.
State inspection fees generate somewhere around $102,000.00 annually. Also generate revenue through state license fees for the people performing the inspections.
Garage fee? What if you don't have a garage?? j/k
About 10 years ago or so in Mass, they decided to require all inspection stations to get a new brake testing machine. I think it was something like a chassis dyno where they got the wheels spinning up to speed. They were extremely expensive and some gas stations/garages couldn't afford them so they were going to stop doing inspections. As it came close to the deadline there were inspections stations going away and you had to start looking to find one. Then state realized what a dumb more they were doing and they changed their mind. That's the way I remember it and from talking to an owner where I had taken my car for inspections the prior year and he no longer did them. Some others in Mass may know more.
We pay $29 a year for safety inspection and emissions are tested every other year. This is besides the yearly excise tax that you pay to your town. Excise is $25 per $1000 of what they value your car. Worst is when you buy new, but the value drops somewhat quickly. My '65 couple is valued at $400, so I pay $10 a year excise.

a lonnng time ago, when Florida had vehicle inspections, they tested the brakes with an apparatus that was on/in the floor that consisted of 4 different grid mechanisms. the vehicle was driven onto the pads and the brakes slammed on, the pad displacements measured how each wheel was braking. don't remember the criteria for pass/fail tho...

Maybe they sent them off for rechrome and never got them back or something else happened. My car is sans front bumpers and center bar (its a '61) right now...rechromed bumpers are due in Monday !!

I paid to have fronts rechromed. They're up in the attic right now. I'm still debating whether to put them on the car or not. I'm heavily leaning toawards keeping them where they are...
