Well if everyone jumped off a cliff would you follow... The mid year doesnt need a trunk to be a great car. It's a sports car not your moms family hauler
Your trunk is behind the seats - MagicV8 and Jackfit can show you how to REALLY utilize it.
More seriously, I've assumed there was an engineering reason that I didn't know about. Like the rear IRS wouldn't fit. Aren't the bodies behind the seats of 61 and 62s pretty similar, except for the IRS? They had gas tanks and trunks...
Different frame. Different tank. Different Spare location. IRS. Different seats and doors. Possibly different top frame. Many small dimension changes result in major changes in space utilization.

Since the gas tank is all the way in the rear, on top of the frame and the top sits on top of the the front of your rear hatch, how would YOU have done it any differently?
Even if you had a conventional trunk lid, the available space would be the same.

I read that it was a financial decision not to do it.
At my Corvette club in the 60s, I remember hearing about some Pinto-like accidents involving stationary C2 coupes that were rear-ended by very fast-moving cars. The doors were jammed shut and the tanks ruptured and caught fire.
Consensus was at such speeds (like 70 mph) this could happen to any vehicle with the gas tank mounted behind the rear axle.
Sropped at a traffic light, my C2 convertble was rear-ended by a car doing about 30 mph in 1982. Bumpers and 'glass took all the impact, no frame damage and it remained perfectly drivable with six working tail lights. It did take a few years for my neck to almost recover.

Was your OEM spare tire mounted underneath ? I would assume that would take a good part of the impact, a metal and rubber buffer between the rear bumpers at the rear diff and crossmember.
