Default 65 ignition shielding

How can I tell the difference from a factory shield versus a reproduction on the top cover? There are no part numbers inside just a couple small slots marked FI and carb on the outside.
TIA, Ray

'65 distributor covers were a one-year only part -- p/n 3864671. The p/n is not on the cover, however. It typically has two nylon/plastic rivets attaching the insulator (vs. 2 metal rivets on '64). It has what is called a 'high depression' location where the front grounding clip is fixed (vs. '66-7 which had where 'low' to clear the redesigned air cleaner).

Original distributor covers are made of two different grades of stainless steel. The top section (where the attaching screw goes) is non-magnetic, probably a type 304. The skirt/wrapping section is magnetic, probably a type 409 like the LH horizontal plug shields. I don't know what material is used in the repros, but they all look way too shiny, polished & 'perfect' when compared to OEM. Suspect they are plated carbon steel.

Great information.

To the OP: Thank you for posting. Timing couldn't be better.

Question: Is there a shop that can restore original shielding to the correct finish?

Vark thanks for your great detailed response. Everything matches your discription of the 65. Plastic rivets are there and top is non magnetic while sides are magnetic. But it is very shining and looks brand new!!
I don't know differnce in metals so looking inside doesn't help.
I am going to sell it but no idea what the value is. On E-Bay there is repo for $209 and a real one for $695.
Any suggestions? TIA, Ray

Like stated above, 65 top shields were a 1 year only item but there is no 100% definitive description of them. Some had metal rivets, some had plastic, some had one of each. Most had the 65 only style front grounding clip but some had the earlier 64 style. As far as I know they all had the extra cut-out on the lower front. Late 64's may have this cut out as well as the date for the change was Feb. 64. Running changes definitely make it hard to identify some parts.
