Default puzzled about engine and trans. alignment

i,m in the process of doing a frame off rest. i put the motor and trans. back on the chassic but i had to make the slot longer on the trans. mount so i could bolt it to the frame mount, trans. and engine mounts are both new,it sits about a quarter to a half inch to far back to enable me to bolt it down where it suppose to go. the frame is not bent , because i took the same motor and trans. off the frame. i even brought two trans mounts from diff. vendors to see if that was the problem, no luck. As far as i know the bolt patterns on the motor mounts are the same or am i wrong, they don;t look like the mounts are offset i hope i explained it right, sorry i forgot i,am working on a 65 coupe thanks

Your saying nothing was changed on the frame and your putting in the same motor and trans? Is it a 4 speed or auto?

If you have your old mounts, put them in to see if it will line up. If it dose then you know it must be the mounts!

Or loosen all the mount bolts, engine also. Get a big pry bar and try prying to get it to fit.

or use a drift pin (big screwdriver) thru the hole, and pry...Pray??

Sounds like you have the wrong engine mounts - that's the only thing that's been changed that would affect the fore-aft position of the engine.

i have the motor and trans. bolted down by the hardest, but it is just not exactly right, everything needs to go forward a little. i can't try my old mounts because one of them are split in half, but when i place the new mounts next to the old one, they look exactly the same, as far as i know there is no diff. in the mounts just so it is chev mounts, or am i wrong. i am putting the same motor and 4 speed back on , i just rebuilt the two. this might not be a problem but just like in my bussiness if u start something wrong it will come back in the end and kick u in the butt. thanks

Every thing should line up with holes. If you had to force it too, something is wrong. Might put a bind on a part.

All the first generation V-8 mounts are not created equal. Some that look the same can be thicker or taller or relationships different between the vertical/horizontal holes and they won't interchange. This causes a problem up/down or side/side. I've never seen it cause a fore/aft problem. I've had the above problems before but I can't tell you the specific differences between the mounts.

Raise the front of your engine off the frame and change out the good remaining old mount. Drop the engine back down a little and see if it will align with the frame mount. If it does align, I'd be pretty confident you have a mount problem on the engine with your replacement mounts.
