My 63 has a Muncie unit. I keep the shifter assembled and install it after the trans is rested in place. But before all the hangers and mounts are installed.

I do keep the shifter ball and t-handle off until the trans install is finished.

It's a bit tricky and it is also easy to install backwards. Just got to try it till you get it.

I would have to refer you to the AIM (Assembly instruction manual) in the sticky thread at the top of the C2 Forum.

Every owner needs to buy one.

BTW the shifter rods go over the top. Not under. On the Muncie anyway.

Here's a good picture. If you had the clevises off your shift rods, you may have to start from scratch as outlined in the service manual to get things aligned where they belong.

It'd also be a good idea to adjust the linkage properly BEFORE you put the transmission in the car. Then, when you bolt the linkage in, it oughta' be right on or very close.

If you look at the shifter in the picture, just outboard of the shift handle, in the top of the shift arms, you can see the slots in the arms where the alignment adjusting tool goes. When you're done adjusting, they should look like the picture with the transmission in neutral.
