Check out this guy wanting to buy a car of mine. Is he nuts or what? Read below what he sent me.
Thanks for the quick response and I'm satisfied with the condition of the vehicle..I'm located in Hillsdale Township MI, am buying the vehicle for my dad as a surprise gift because his birthday on the way, may i know the last price you are asking?. due to my occupation as a marine engineer at this moment i am presently working offshore, sometimes access to regular email and phone calls are very poor in offshore due to inefficiency of the immarsat service.Fortunately the internet access working averagely and i was able to come across the advert of vehicle . I really want the vehicle to be a surprise to my dad by not disclosing the vehicle until the delivery is made to him,so am sure he will be more than happy with the vehicle.I don't mind adding an extra $50 dollars for you to take the advert down from the site so that i can be rest assured that am in hand of vehicle.I insisted on PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my PayPal account,as i have my bank a/c attached to it,i will need you to give me your PayPal email address so i can make the payment as soon as possible for the vehicle..Notice you don't need to bother your self about the shipment,i have an international courier shipping company that will come for pick-up,they will also determine and secure the shipment because i have some items to ship together with the vehicle so let me have the weight very well so that a waybill can be created before shipment can be done, because i will be adding some extra fee to the payment which is meant for the shipping and insurance..all you need to do is as soon as you receive the money in your account you will deduct your vehicle fee and send the rest funds to the shipping company information that will be provided to you in the mean time....So I will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the making of the payment.
**Once again ,I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping. I will have my mover come over as soon as you have your money in your account**
I must say, their grammar is improving from the days when they wanted to scam victims with a transfer of their overseas money into the victim's account.
Recently, everytime I listed a car for sale, I got the same "offer" as you. I guess this is what modern day pirates do when they're not raiding ships on the high seas.
Has to be the same guy, I am trying to sell my 2500 Silverado and got this reply:
Thanks for getting back,i am buying the Item as a birthday gift for sister and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer.I really want the item to be a surprise for sister so i wont let him know anything about the it until it gets delivered to her , i am sure she will be more than happy with it. I will be making my payment through Paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my PayPal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your PayPal email address so i can make the payments asap and please if you don't have PayPal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.ca and get it set up , after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with PayPal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the item up after i have made the payments. Cheers
Here's a different spin, I'm trying to buy a car that was listed on E-Bay. The seller has a 100% rating but everything he has sold in the past has been collector postage stamps, not a single car part. He offered to sell it to me through E-Bay and would pay for the shipping and the return shipping if I didn't like the car. I told him I'll be at his house with a car trailer and the cash within 24 hrs. but I'm not going to pay him through PayPal. He replies he just moved and is no longer where the car is located so there is nobody there to show me the car. I told him to have the car shipped to his new location (unknown to him, but he moved to my state) and I will pay him directly. Sure sounds like a scam to me, especially when he offered the car to me for about $20K less than current market value.

Beware, yes! I was sent a very authentic second chance offer on a real listing from Seattle on a '64 Convertible driver with the same general write up, it was at my most recent high bid. Said the car had failed to sell and they would sell for my high bid amount. Same offer to return ship. I asked a few questions- got a reply that was very pushy as if we "had a deal." I said no let's talk this afternoon. Looked up the phone number from the original ebay listing (a real dealership of classics). After thinking about it, I wrote again and said I'd like to discuss in the call my flying out and driving home. If I didn't buy the car they could either buy my one-way ticket home or the cost that would have been return shipping (whichever was cheaper) so that I could evaluate the car before money changed hands. Seemed fair to me.
I call the guy in the original ad and, price not seeming to be a factor I didn't bring it up at first, just talked about the car. When I asked about the return trip deal instead of return shipping the very polite guy said he could never do such a thing. After I tried to reason it out as the same $, we both discovered it was not his email. This ad even "wanted to go through ebay" to "protect us both." I assume it was pretty sophisticated.
Reported to ebay fraud, never heard back but I did the best I could. There are a lot of cheap scams out there to send out, only a few suckers per hundred tries adds up to big bucks for them. Hence I will only EVER buy another car online after seeing it in person. I did buy a '70 Challenger sight unseen from Denver once (I'm in TN, obviously) with good luck, but I now consider that a no-no.
I thought I'd agree with you and include my scam experience to the archive.

"Hey pal....How about you giving me your PayPal info and I contact them to verify your info? And then maybe a call to the FBI for good measure. Get a damn JOB idiot!"
Marine engineers really love to surprise members of their family !

They are also buying a lot of cars. I've had two of these.
I think with your name, email, and phone number, they can get your account and then pay themselves from it. You may not have much in there to lose, but $50 here, $20 there, and it all adds up to more than they had before.
