Default clearence problems after Engine Installed

I just put in a 454 in my 66 coupe. I noticed that I am going to have a hood clearence problem. I have the stinger hood on it and an edelbrock 2.0 performer intake. It looks like the air filter is sitting to high. I've thought about replacing the 3 inch filter to a 1 inch to help clear the hood along with the drop air cleaner. Will i need a different Intake? Ive also noticed that the shorty headers on the drivers side are rubbing the steering box. I have side exhaust and plan on keeping them as well with headers. Anyone recommend a set of headers that are set up for side exhaust besides hookers? The engine is sitting in the car without a transmission and will be like this probably for a few months. I'm wanting to put a keisler 5 speed in it. A mechanic told me that the engine will be fine sitting in the car without a transmission. Has anyone ever done this? Should I support the back of the engine?

it will be difficult to see your clearance issues without the engine supported with the trans.
things will take on a whole new perspective when properly mounted however air cleaner issues do arise depending on which intake you use with a bb
i would support the mill from the bell if it were mine
the fact you want to install a 5 speed may make you consider re pulling everything any way depending on what 5 speed you pick

I had a buddy of mine come over and helped me with getting a couple of 2 by 4's on the back of the engine for support then we cut off an inch of the air filter and it clears the hood now. My only concern is the headers on the drivers side. I'm going with a Keisler rs600 5speed perfect fit for the mid year corvettes.

If cutting the filter worked, then the stock drop base air cleaner should work with a 3" element.

The header issue is discussed fairly regularly, so you should find something using the search function... Try

Hedman makes a longer header with the collector facing toward the outside to connect to factory sidepipes. Either the 68210 (uncoated) or 68216 (coated).
