I inherited this car, in the link, from my father, two years ago when he passed away. I later came to discover the underdash tag. I have asked this question on other forums, but I have never been able to find out much info. This article ran a few months ago, and I have still not received any info on the car. I thought, since I am new to this forum, that I would take a shot in the dark, and see if anybody might have some info, on these cars, and the engineering tag. At this point the only info I have uncovered, is that Chevrolet did not keep records of these cars, when built. If anybody might have some info, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!
great story, i would try to get someone who knows '64's from NCRS to verify it's authenticity if possible, you have a rare one for sure..... is it a late build '64?
I think Sept '64 is a very late build. They switched to 65 in October I believe. Have you found any numbers on the body in grease pencil? Mine was built Feb. 10 and carries #250 on the body.
Neat car. It fits the 1965 convertible vin number #00003, which also is a engineering car with similar stylying clues that was built early the following year. This car has 427 emblems, and a engineering 427 engine, similar floor mats (the grates), a 67 elkhart blue color leather interior in 65 patterns and matching paint. 1965 vin #00008 and 00009 were fuel injection cars painted nassau blue with white leather. The engine in 1965 #00009 is a May 1964 dated and stamped block, so I believe these cars historically had very early parts on them and were constructed long before their actualy trim tag production date
Your car's notched front crossmember tells me it was a big block 396 engineering pilot car, built Sept 1963 (vin #'s 0001 thru #1741, such as 40867S1000002) at the beginning of 1964 production. My guess is the vin # is within the first 20 cars as pilot cars usually fit this area
What do the emblems on the side say? What does the trim tag say? What is the vin number? All of this will help with research of the vehicle.
My best guess is it is a 396, side pipe Engineering car painted Cadillac Fire Frost color that is very close to 1965 Nassau blue, and had white leather interior, as shown in the headliner of the hardtop.
I have sent the 'VETTE' article to two GM Engineering friends, who along with John Hinkley are the best in helping you discover the history. Take your time here with the research, as you have a real piece of Corvette history, and you want to restore this car correctly for enjoyment and value.
I will be happy to provide the the engineers names and contact info if you PM me please.
I found that the Bunkie Knudson styling car, at the link below, has the same engineering tag, as my car. The Bunkie Knudson car, also has some of the features, that are on my car. I know this car was built, specifically for Bunkie Knudson, but I have yet to figure out for who, or what my car was built for.

You are correct Mike, and I have sent off all your photos to date to an engineer last night and am waiting for an answer. In the mean time please take photos of the lower side area of the car where the sidepipes mount up to the side of the car.
