I just had both door posts rechromed and now prepping the body for paint. I noticed the two small studs (one threaded and one solid on the door posts have ripped the fiberglass apart on the door. It doesn't look like must material(glass) was around the studs to give much support. This must be common? Should I just reglass and drill a new hole? I suspect it will crack again under little stress. Anything I can do to fix this?
Thanks for any help,
Todd
Todd,
The unthreaded inboard pin is a locator, and the outside threaded pin is to pull up the fiberglass tight to the reveal and post. This is a tough repair to do correctly, but should be done, as it will add a lot more stiffness to the post, and keep the door from cracking under the post. Taper the glass back as far as necessary to get a good bite, and then reconstruct as necessary. You can do some of the repair from the inside, but it is very difficult to get to. I use aluminum foil from the bottom side, after the taper is done, to create a "mold" of sorts, and to maintain thickness. Sometimes it's helpful to use a lighter glass cloth to start with, and then finish with matting. You can also chop up some matting, and make a "paste". I've seen some pretty bad repairs in that area over the years, but if it's done correctly, it won't crack. Good luck.
I agree with Mike. I also make a reinforcement plate to go under the nut on the threaded post on every one I do. I make a long, skinny plate that spreads the load at least an inch on either side of the hole.
Don't know much about the internals of the door post....I DO know if you don't make sure that the fit against the outer door shell is just right...your paint will crack, right where the horizontal chrome part rests against the door on the outside, after repeated closing of the door....its the only thing on my paint that looks bad...
