Electrical guru's needed.

When i backed off i happened to looked at the fuel gauge because it caught my eye, it was going wacky, jumping up and down and then would settle and then go up, down, and settle down and show 1/4 tank which is where it should be.
Too hot to check right now.
It was still acting up after the show on the way home.
It worked fine up until this AM's little speed exhibit.
Question: Loose wire on gauge or sending unit?
I can fix a loose wire, that easy and i hope that this is the problem.
or
Did the sending unit finally take a ****?
How do i check the Sending unit?
TIA
although I'm not a guru, that's what I'd do first - to see if something easy will fix the problem, and because "rust never sleeps"

Also look at your ground wire,s on the gauges. But most the time it will go to full if it is a ground. It may have taking a dump on you but with you pulling all those G,S May just got a little something on you look at the grounds and the wire back at the tank...
