Default Year One Crate Engine

Just wondered if anyone has experience with the 350/400 crate engines they offer. The CT350PC1 or AT350PC1 (aluminum head) engines seem like a good value at $3000.00 or $3500.00.
I was thinking of installing heads and headers on my L-79 but for the cost is would seem like a better idea going with one of these options.

Was that a ZZ4 350 HP? I have heard that you should take a GM crate motor apart and redo it or it will start burning oil at about 7K

nothing wrong with GM crate engines as they are all new parts.....also carry the best warantee and can be purchased at most Dealers.......off brands are merely rebuilts with mostly new parts

to the best of my knowledge, the ZZ4 355hp engine is not a fast burn engine; and, early style intake manifolds will not fit a fast burn engine.

Sounds like the answer must be "No, nobody has experience with the Year One crate engines."

However, in a pseudo related note, I've always had excellent luck with Year One products for my 72 Skylark restoration.

There is a local shop here in Gainesville, Georgia.
The owner said he had some problems in the ones he installed.
He does not use them anymore.
Too bad, because they look like good engines.

Shop is called ASAP.

So it sounds like Year One crate engines get a bad review. Too bad cause they look like a geat value. I hesitate to go with a ZZ4 because it is only 350 HP. If I make that move I want at least 400hp. Do the ZZ4's run better then the stock L-79? What about the Fast Burns?

you can get a ZZ383, but because it is a fastburn engine it won't take a standard intake (even though it is drilled for one the intake ports don't match up very well).

this ought to knock your socks off...

I had a zz4..it was fine for what it was. Didnt burn oil, ran great but only 350 hp. I then went with 383/500hp/500tq...that is what I was looking for.

Before I went with a 383 I looked hard at the fast burn heads and cam setup on a zz4 but in my opinion there is no comparison to a stroked small block.

The hp and torque curves on a stroker bring power on quicker and there wasnt a "flat" spot anywhere in the rpm curve...1200rpm - 6500rpm that 383 pulled like a big block and weighed much less.

For example, I saw a stroked 383 short block on the forum in the for sale section today...looked like a very solid build with the right parts and with some AFR 195 heads, comp cam and RPM air gap intake it would make a nasty street motor. Pretty much the same setup in my 383. You wont regret it...ever...

my 2 cents...

Cheers,

Frank

ZZ4 in 64 conv with no spare tire setup, 3:55 rear, 235 street radials, factory 2" manifolds, and restrictive factory sidepipes will run an easy 12.9 at 108 in the quarter, and last for over 65,000 very abusive miles.... mine did. Never burned oil, and when torn down, there was no significant cylinder wear - I could have left the engine alone for another 65 thou.... if I hadn't dropped a valve thru a piston with lots of way over 6,000 rpm shennanigins one night........ It would still probably be as fast, or faster, than any stock 327 vette because of it's extra cubes and "more power under the curve" roller cam.

that said, I did rebuilt it to about the same power level as Frank above, but with less torque and more RPM..... since I didn't stroke it....... (Extreme budget limits caused by wife, kids, and....... boat )

You are in Ohio, go see Bob Fall at Bob Fall Machine. He can build you any combo you wish and meet or exceed any quality you wish for.
If Bob is still running his shop he is very good and a good guy to boot.
