I have a minor diff leak and am getting ready to replace the rear end cover gasket. Do I need to go to the Chevy dealer and buy 4 pints of GM rear axle lube, or is there a reasonably good brand name substitute to be found at the auto parts discount chains?

As stated any reputable gear oil will work. I'm currently using K & W Trans-X® Posi-Trac® Limited Slip Gear Oil Additive purchased from Advanced Auto parts for posi-additive.

Great thanks. I will be at Advanced tomorrow, as they are having an amazing sale on Mobil 1 engine oil for my other cars, and I will pick up some diff oil.
Don't take this the wrong way, but have you looked at what is required to pull that diff cover off? Look hard before you proceed. It is not the 45 minute procedure found with C1s.

Hey thanks Dan for the warning. I just checked the manual and you are correct - what a pita it is for replacing a $4 part.
I'd be careful adding the posi friction modifier, as allows more diff clutch pack slippage around corners, but sometimes more than you're wanting for straight line traction. You can always add it later.
