Default What is the correct number for a 1962 starter

Is the number for a 62 corvette delco starter 1107233 or 1107242. Vendors who are trying to sell me a starter say the number 242 is correct but my Vol 1 corvette restoration guide says 233.

Both are supposedly right depending on which flavor '62 you have but 233 is most likely what you want if you have a stick shift -- others have 'unverified' use.

You keep asking numbers questions and I keep sending you to this site that has nearly every number imaginable:

I did go to that site but I did not know what they mean by usage unverified. Is 242 correct or not. Also is the number stamped on the starter casing or is there a tag with a number like the distributor is.

Go to the NCRS bookstore and get the NCRS Specification Guide 1953-1967 by John Amgwert. Best $16 spent.

"Corvette by the Numbers" says:
1107889 - early production cars only, 327 manual trans
1107233 - second design, all 327 manual trans
1107242 - all 327 powerglide trans
1107219 - listed in factory assembly manual for 327/PG, but apparently never produced.

It's not listed for any Corvette application from 1955 thru 1982. From the part number sequence it looks to be a passenger car or truck application from 1964 +/-.

Depends on your transmission - '62 manual vs. Powerglide are completely different animals, as the manual starter attaches to the bellhousing with horizontal bolts, and the Powerglide starter attaches to the engine block with two vertical bolts.

Manuals take the 233, Powerglides take the 242.

what's "Corvette by the Numbers". is that some sort of manual. What I've read states that 1107889 usage unverified

Moxie,
So far, I haven't seen where you mention if you have a manual tranny (3 or 4sp), or if you have a Powerglide tranny----------------IT MAKES A MAJOR DIFFERENCE FOR THE STARTER CHOICE!

"Corvette by the Numbers" is a book, written by Alan L. Colvin, published by Bentley Publishers in 2002. It's about 600 pages of all Corvette part numbers from 1955 to 1982. I have found it to be very useful over the years.

As for 1107889, I just quoted what it says.

My copy says it listed for $49.95 (yikes!) back then when I bought it, so you owe me about $00.02 for the starter number advice.

I would pay you the .02 cent but since the number 889 is wrong for 327 engines, we'll call it even. Now that I've dug into it, the 889 starters were for 1961 283 engines. You will find 889 starters with a 1962 date but those were still being made for the 283 passenger car engines, thanks

Hey, no problem, just remember that you get what you pay for!

Interesting, tho, that you have become such an expert on the 889s, when both the site Frank provided to you and my data both show the same thing - that it was possibly used on early '62 manual trans vettes. What have you found to contradict that?

Since I’m an expert (according to you) I do not have to give my info resource, just believe what I say.

Why bother with external sources (although the Colvin book is pretty accurate)? If you'll get the NCRS '61-'62 Judging Guide, it'll tell you exactly what you should have, from one end of the car to the other; that's the standard against which the car is judged, if judging is in your plan.

Yes, I plan on ordering that guide. Right now my bible is the complete corvette restoration vol 1 by Nolan Adams. He states that for 62 the starter that was used is 1107233 for manual transmission. When I read other articles about number items that say maybe or could be or unverified, I hastate to use that as a source.

Hi John -

Just out of curiosity, do you think that the two sources discussed above about the 889s being used in early production '62s are incorrect, or is it just that NCRS recognizes only the 233 for judging purposes even if the 889 was used in early production cars?
Thanks,
Glenn
