Default fixing odometer - C2

It's been some time since seeing a thread come up on this topic. The forum search function - kaput. Couldn't find any info on it.

Question: Can fixing the C2 odometer be a DIY operation, or is this normally sent out? . . Something about a 'plastic gear' is all I remember.

Pretty good article about a total cluster rebuild at http://www.corvettemagazine.com/inte...r-rebuild.html. Includes some specifics related to the speedometer and odometer. Just rebuilt my own out of my '63. Not really much of a problem if you pay attention to what you are taking out and where it goes back. My problem turned out to be a stripped worm gear at the very core of the speedometer. Bought the new gear at Corvette Central and put it in and it worked perfectly. Good luck.

I rebuilt mine last winter also. Hardest part is getting the cluster out. After that, it was a breeze.

If it has a metal gear in it now, and you replace it with a metal gear, you are not likely to change the magnetic properties of the unit. But If you use a plastic gear, it will likely change the calibration. If you use the plastic gear, take the trip odometer loose or it will self destruct in no time.

Totally agree on that cluster removal thing, Subfixer. My secret was just keep unscrewing until nothing is left in the interior...and then pull the steering column.

Thanks, guys. .. I thinking to pull the works out and do this myself.

LICS shows a set of 3 replacement metal gears under one part number on their website. Do all 3 gears get replaced, or just 1 gear?. Is one of those gears speedo related? There was a mention of having a certain one of those gears remagnetized at a speedo shop.

Don't know what year you are working on, but mine is a '63. I only had to replace one gear. It is a worm gear, approximately 1 - 1 1/2 inches long, located at the very back of the speedometer. Had to be knocked out of the case with a small punch (but, no problem to do it). My gear was worn down to the point that it no longer turned the other gear that it was supposed to connect with. That worm gear, and the "trip meter" were the only things that I had to replace. Hope this helps.

That looks correct but not exactly what I bought. I got mine at Corvette Central and it is part #392259. Looks like the same part, perhaps manufactured slightly different. It is labelled as "OD DRIVE GEAR - METAL" at Corvette Central. Good luck.

Got it.. ! .. Thanks, Roger. .. Couldn 't find it earlier. The part # went right to it.

Speedo works fine but the odometer fix on my car is long overdue.

mrg
did you completely remove the cluster or just pull it out to get behind it to replace the gear?

Once you get the odo gears replaced and sorted out, the system will work a lot longer if the trip function is disabled. The flimsy gear train that drives the numbered wheels will have less load in this way. Fashioning a 'Z' bracket to fit on the RH leg of the support ***'y U-bolt will hold the trip cable in the up postion thereby eliminating the troublesome trip function.

Dave, I took the whole cluster out. I had several guage issues that needed to be fixed. But, honestly, I don't think I could have gotten the speedo out without taking the cluster out.

Dave ..

I haven't gotten on this one yet. I'll likely pull the gauge cluster. I notice some gauge lights are burned out. The steering wheel column and hub could stand to be refinished, as well.

vark .. Thanks for your mention about disabling the trip function. Sounds like a good idea!

. How did you remove the main shaft that has the worm gear on it?

Once you get the cluster out, then you separate the speedometer out. If you remove the needle and then the face you will se how it all fits and comes apart.
