Pertronix Ignitor Question
Someone on the forum recommended a Pertronix Ignitor to me some time ago to replace my points ignition when I was considering a new distributor.
Anyone know of the correct Pertronix part number for a 1962 327?
Summit lists these 2 parts, not sure which one I should get:
PNX-1181
GM: 1957-74, most V8 points ignition systems
PNX-1181LSC
Buick, Chevrolet: points conversion, electronic ignition system
They also have the Ignitor-II series, which is listed as this:
PNX-91181
AMC/GM: 1957-74 V8 engines, Ignitor II solid state electronic ignition system
Any advice greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Re: Pertronix Ignitor Question (Anton62)
The answer will depend on whether you have a single point (common) or dual point igntion, which
in '62 was only used on SHP and FI engines and '62 was the last year the dual point was used.

Re: Pertronix Ignitor Question (SWCDuke)
I'm fairly confident it's a dual point setup. Which Pertronix kit should I go with?
Please excuse my ignorance with this car, I'm only 24, inherited the car from my father, and most of my car experience is on 1990+ cars. As I fix up & restore this car, I'm sure I'll learn a lot!

Re: Pertronix Ignitor Question (Anton62)
The 1181 is the style which uses a wheel mounted under the rotor with 8 magnets and an electronic module. This requires removing the dist to shim the gear at the bottom of the shaft.
The 1181LSC, uses a module which senses the high point of the lobes that originally opened the points. With the LSC, the ignition must be turned on for 3-5 sec to energize the module before starting the engine and the dist does not need to be removed. This is the easier unit to install, but, personally, I prefer the 1181 with the magnet wheel.
You WILL, for a fact, get conflicting opinions regarding the PerTronix conversion. I have them in all my engines (6) with point type dist and have never had any problems. I have installed many for friends/customers and have had no complaints.
My engines have seen as much as 7000rpm without a hiccup.
NOTE:
the PerTronix IS NOT a SUPER DUPER high output ignition. It is an electronic conversion unit to eliminate points/condenser, but, by the nature of its design, it does provide a hotter ignition.
OK, Dave, you're up next.

Love the Pertronix, I installed mine after I bought the car, no problems pulling 7000 RPM. They recomend a special coil, but no big deal they are still stock size so they will fit your harness, etc. Duke has had great luck tricking out points, but for the money I could not resist. I enjoy working on the vette but I enjoy driving much more.

To find a lot of data on the Pertronix go to http://www.vintageperformance.com/retrorockets They are a good place to do business with and can answer your questions. I don't believe that Summit or Jegs list the Pertronix for the dual point dist. There are two different dual point distributors used on the Corvette. Your 1962 should have the late version with the cent. advance unit above the breaker plate but you should check it before ordering. Does your dist. have a vacumn advance unit with a rubber hose running to the carb? If so, it is not a dual point dist. The Pertronix that is made for the dual points has to have the dist removed to install the unit. The single point unit 1181LSC can be installed with the dist. in the car. Takes about 30-45 minutes.

Re: Pertronix Ignitor Question (Ed T)
I'm no genius, but I believe this is a dual-point distributor, right?

So, what does anyone think I should get?

For your distributor (dual-point, advance above breaker plate) you need #1181 - you can order at http://www.vintageperformance.com/retrorockets/
