Replacing grommet on '63 speedo cable
I am replacing the speedo cable and grommet on my '63. I thought the grommet would have a "split" in it so that it could be twisted on to the cable. Not true. The old grommet and the new one are both whole pieces. Must have to remove one of the speedo ends to replace the grommet, but neither seem to want to budge easily and I do not want to mess up the new cable.
Okay, guys, what's the secret here? Thanks for your help.

LIC and others sell a pointed tool that screws onto the cable and you slide the grommet over that.
37-16E TACH/SPEEDO CABLE GROMMET INSTALLATION TOOL 63-4 1

You could probably rig something out of a wooden dowel.

Melting Slicks
Good for you. I split one last year trying to do the same thing. It was a BIOTCH to split and it did not fit when I was done. I probably should have asked the same question!

In the plant, we used an aluminum version of the home-made wooden tool in the photo below, with a little 50-50 solution of Joy soap and water; worked slick.

JohnZ...it's always great to know how the experts did it. Thanks for the reply and the picture. My old plastic funnel neck worked for me, but my "tool" was not nearly as professional looking as yours. I also didn't think about putting the string through it to hold it in place. I needed three hands...one to hold it and two to pull it on. Roger
