Default Midyear Trailer Hitch

Anyone know if this style hitch will fit on a midyear with a dual mount rear spring? I borrowed this pic from another thread.

Thanks
Tom

That's the GOOD ONE!!!! Yes, it will work. No holes in the bumpers or glass. Pull a pin, and drop the hitch to access the tire tub. Do you have a source, or are you buying from an individual. I'd like to buy one, but never see one for sale.

BTW, make sure that you add longer bolts at the rear end plate, or you'll strip the holes on the rear end. You can actually leave the plate on the rear, and the two brackets on the valance, and remove the hitch. It's really a good setup.

That's a pretty neat setup .

I'm curious about what kind of tongue weight and total weight a midyear outfitted with a hitch like that is capable of handling?

Thanks,

I've had one for years, just sold an extra I had about a year or so ago. Without going out to look, the hitch is rated as I recall at 3,000 lbs. towing and 300 lbs. tongue weight. I've had no problems with the loads I tow, although years ago when I had a '63 with the same hitch on it and was towing a boat & trailer I did install air shocks on the car to give a little lift to the rear.

OK, thanks. We have a little 18' R-pod travel trailer that weighs in at around 3,500 and a tongue weight of around 350 so it might be a bit much for that setup.

Well, I'd check before I wrote it off. I may be wrong on the weight limits, I'd think I'd check.

The dual mount rear spring I am referring to the the VBP adjustable spring rate set up. The spring does not mount to the diff. It mounts to two brackets attached to the rear crossmember.

I know I will get a lot of flack for saying this, but I would advise against towing just about anything with a C2. They weren’t designed for the additional load on the rear suspension components.

I foolishly put a hitch on my first ’67 back in 1970 to tow a light boat (about 3,000 lbs). It was the only car I had at the time. Within two summers of towing I had rear wheel bearing problems. With two passengers and even just 200 lbs of tongue weight, you are exceeding the advertised load capacity of the vehicle. It’s not about the hitch’s capacity; it’s more about the car’s load capacity.

I have the drop down hitch on my '63. I tow a '34 Harley and '66 Sprint on a Kendon trailer. Tongue weight @100 lbs.

Hey SKY65,

Back in '73 I towed a Model A Victoria from western Nebraska back to Virginia behind my '69 with a hitch like this, which I still have and use it on my '66.

Before that, I bought it to flat tow a '66 L79 Nova to Colonial Beach Dragway and Budds Creek (MIR) behind my 1st corvette, a '67 435 conv.

Also, a friend use to tow his 17' boat behind his '69 smallblock coupe with no problems.

As far as using it with a dual spring mount, it mounts to the 4 bolts that mount the original spring to the differential with two L brackets. I figure if the dual
mount spring doesn't hang down too much, and you spaced the L brackets down for clearance then it should work.

Let us know what you find out.
