Default Side pipe question

I'm in the process of installing a new set of side pipes on a 65. When I removed the old ones I noticed there was no heat riser. How important is a heat riser when I'm not going to drive it in cold weather?

Not very........most remove it and put the spacer in anyway so you're probably ahead of the game..

If it's already missing, I wouldn't add it back. Unless you want it to look stock that is.

It's odd that the original was gone and the exhaust still fit. You need either the valve or a spacer to have everything fit correctly. I cut the flapper out of the valve. That way. it still looks stock and the weight goes up and down as it should. The only way to tell is that exhaust comes out both sides equally when it's cold.

I agree with Jim, when I "gutted" my heat riser, I tapped the thru hole on the one side and screwed a bolt into it smeared with exhaust sealer....Not that you'll notice a slight leak with sidepipes...Ha Ha Ha!!

Lack of the heat riser doesn't matter much on a '65, as it has a hot-air choke; it does matter on '66-'67's, as their intake manifold-mounted remote choke thermostat will take much longer to pull off the choke and fast idle cam without the heat riser valve.
